Where the Magic Began — The Story of Young Bakers Studio

It began quietly, in a warm kitchen filled with the gentle hum of a mixer and the sweet scent of sugar and butter. A child’s hands—still learning the rhythm of baking—reached for a spoon. Another pair of hands—steady, practiced, loving—guided them softly. In that moment, time slowed.

This is where my story lives.

My name is Lorena Horne. I was born in Lima, Peru, where cooking is never just cooking. It is memory. It is tradition. It is love passed from one generation to the next. In Peru, recipes are stories, and the kitchen is a place of belonging.

When my son Gabriel was in middle school, we began baking alfajores together—delicate cookies filled with dulce de leche, dusted with powdered sugar like a quiet snowfall. We baked at our kitchen table, laughing, learning, trying again. What began as a family ritual slowly became something more. Through patience, creativity, and teamwork, those alfajores helped us pay for Gabriel’s trip to Spain. More importantly, they taught us that effort, imagination, and love can open doors far beyond the kitchen.

Years later, that same magic found a new home.

While teaching in a Reggio Emilia–inspired classroom, I carried this belief with me: children are capable, curious, and full of ideas worth listening to. One day, we brought baking into the classroom—not as a lesson to follow, but as an invitation to explore.

Something shifted.

Children who were usually quiet began to speak with confidence.
Children who struggled to focus became calm, engaged, and proud.
Hands were busy, minds were alive, and hearts were fully present.

We weren’t just baking cookies.
We were building confidence.
We were practicing collaboration.
We were learning together.

In the spirit of Reggio Emilia, the children led the learning. They asked questions, tested ideas, made mistakes, and discovered solutions together. Baking became a language—one of the hundred languages of children—through which they expressed creativity, problem-solving, leadership, and joy.

That was the moment I knew this was not just an activity.
It was a calling.

I invited a small group of children to bake with me outside the classroom. We gathered around the table, measuring, mixing, experimenting, and decorating. The children supported one another, celebrated each other’s ideas, and took pride in their work. Their voices mattered. Their ideas shaped the experience.

And from that shared table, Young Bakers Studio was born.

Today, Young Bakers Studio is a place where children are not simply learners—they are creators, leaders, and entrepreneurs. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, we believe learning happens through relationships, hands-on exploration, and meaningful experiences. Children take on real roles, collaborate with purpose, and see themselves as capable contributors to their community.

At Young Bakers Studio, baking is not about perfection.
It is about process.
It is about trust.
It is about honoring children’s ideas and making learning visible.

Everything I do grows from this place—where Peruvian tradition meets education, where the kitchen becomes a classroom, and where children are trusted to lead their own learning.

This is the magic of Young Bakers Studio.

And it all begins, as it always has,
in the kitchen. ✨🍪
